Novarel 10,000 IU Vial

What is Novarel?

During an assisted reproductive cycle (ART), Novarel® is used to induce egg maturation and trigger ovulation (the release of an egg(s) from the ovary) in women who have been treated with ovulation inducing medications.

How Do I Use Novarel®?
Here are step-by-step instructions for taking Novarel® (chorionic gonadotropin) injections:

Wash your hands thoroughly and make sure the surface you work on is clean.

Remove the plastic cap from the vial of powder and the vial of diluent. Wipe the rubber stoppers of both vials with alcohol.

Using a 3 cc syringe with a 22 gauge, 1½ inch needle, pull back on the plunger to the 1 cc mark. Inject 1 cc of air into the vial containing the liquid diluent after piercing the rubber stopper with the needle.

Invert the vial, making sure the tip of the needle is below the fluid level, and withdraw 1 cc of the liquid. Any remaining liquid can be discarded.

Withdraw the needle and pierce the vial containing the powder. Slowly inject the 1 cc of diluent into the vial of powder.

Gently swirl the solution until the powder is dissolved and clear. Do not shake.

Invert this vial making sure the tip of the needle is well below the liquid level. Withdraw all of this medication. You might not be able to withdraw every drop.

Withdraw the needle and replace the cap. Pull back on the plunger to clear the needle of any medication. Remove the needle from the syringe and replace with a new, 1 ½ inch needle.

With the needle pointing toward the ceiling, flick the side of the syringe to disperse any air bubbles and the air pocket at the top of the syringe, then gently push the plunger until one or two drops of liquid are expressed to make sure you have eliminated any air.

Gently push on plunger until air pocket is gone and expel a drop of liquid

How to give an intramuscular injection

This is an injection that you give into a muscle.
Here are step-by-step instructions for administering an intramuscular injection.

Lying down-or standing with your weight off of the side to be injected-locate the upper outer quadrant (or quarter) of your buttock. The injection is given here.

Take a deep pinch between your thumb and forefinger and wipe with alcohol. Then let dry.

Place the needle into this pinch of tissue and muscle completely, leaving none of the needle exposed.

Draw back on the plunger. If you are accidentally in a blood vessel, blood will appear in the syringe. If so, pull the needle out, replace it with a new, sterile needle, and repeat the process.

Slowly push the plunger all the way to inject the medication, and pull the needle straight out.

Alternate between your left and right sides, each time you give yourself an injection.

Apply pressure and massage the injection site gently for thirty seconds after you administer the shot.

Never reuse needles or syringes.

Dispose of the syringe in a biohazard container such as a Sharps container or in an unbreakable plastic container such as a laundry detergent bottle that you can seal.

Please be aware that some of these instructions may vary based on your particular situation or preference.
